Kylie Cosmetics Matte Liquid Lipsticks & Liner Review + Swatches!!

Alright, so I decided I would see what all the hype was about for Kylie Cosmetics Matte Liquid Lipsticks. I have been seeing them all over the place lately! The kits include a lipstick and a liner for $29, which isn’t too bad. You can also buy the lipstick and liner separately for $17 and $14, respectively.

The formula is a true matte without being too drying. The darker colors apply a bit patchy, but that can be normal for darker lipsticks (note: I never have this problem with ColourPop). Once the lipstick is dry, it does not smudge or rub off at all! The lipsticks are also very pigmented which means you do not have to apply a lot of coats to achieve a bold look. I also love that a matching lip liner comes with every lipstick. I don’t have a lot of lip liners because I usually use a clear lip liner, so with all of these lip liners I have been able to mix and match them with other lipsticks that I have to create new looks.

Left to right or bottom to top: True Brown K, Kourt K, Dolce K, 22, Mary Jo K, Posie K, KoKo K, Candy K

My favorite shade is True Brown K. It’s the perfect Fall color and I have been wearing it OUT!

Left to Right: True Brown K, Kourt K, Mary Jo K

Overall, I like the lipsticks. However, I can’t say whether or not I would purchase anymore because the quality and shades are comparable to ColourPop and they’re almost 3 times cheaper.

Play! by Sephora Subscription Box | November 2016

Alright, so it’s time to PLAYYYY…Sephora style! I look forward to receiving this box every month! Each month, the box is filled with 5 handpicked samples (plus a fragrance) for $10! I can do without the fragrances because I don’t wear perfume. You also get a cute bag every single month. Also with this subscription, if you are a member of the Sephora Rewards Program, you will be able to use the card received in each box for 50 bonus rewards points on your next in store purchase. You also get free one-on-one tutorials on how to use the products in your box. In the few months that I’ve had this box, I haven’t used the tutorials. I should probably make some time to try one out.

Anyway, this month’s theme was “Best in Glow.” When I received the email announcing the theme, I was super excited because I have been on a mad hunt trying to find products that give my skin the “glow from within” look. So, did any of the products achieve this? Let’s see below!

Are you a glow getter???

Cover FX Illuminating Primer, $38.00

This primer preps skin for makeup application. It has a light reflecting mineral complex and it helps eliminate dullness. You apply this product onto clean, moisturized skin since this is not a moisturizer. If you view the video at the bottom of this post, you will see that it has a nice glowing effect. Looking at it on my forearm, I’m thinking that it will be too light light for my complexion since it has a pearly tint. I need products with a golden tint.  I will try it on my face one day. A little goes a long way, so you will not need a lot of product for a full face.

Also, according to the product details, Cover FX’s complexion perfecting formulas are a go to for sensitive skin because they are irritant and paraben-free.

Sephora Collection Ultra Shine Lip Gel in Pin Up Ink, $12.00

I used to wear glosses all the time before lipstick became my go to. I am trying to get back into wearing glosses just to change up my look. This gloss is not sticky and is very hydrating. It has a hot pink hue, so I am not sure if I will ever really wear this color. I am not really a pink lip kind of girl. If glosses are your thing, I would recommend this one! It comes in 38 other colors, so you will definitely find one that you love!

Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour in Rose Gold, $29.00

I like eyeshadow sticks because they are multipurpose. You can use them as a shadow, liner, or even a highlighter depending on the shade. Since this one is a rose gold, you can use it for all purposes. The shadow is very pigmented. It glides on so smoothly and blends easily. It is also buildable, which will allow you to apply multiple layers to give you an opaque glimmer. This shadow stick comes in 10 other shades.

Caudalie Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet, $39.00

Who doesn’t love a good moisturizer!?! I know I do because I HATE having dry skin! This moisturizer leaves me skin feeling hydrated and soft! This product leaves your skin looking healthy and luminous.

GLAMGLOW THIRSTYMUD Hydrating Treatment, $69.00

I was not able to try this product out because it is not for sensitive skin. It is good for normal, oily, combination, or dry skin. According to the product details, it is a non-drying hydrating mask that leaves your skin instantly moisturized. “It moisturizes, restores, replenishes, and calms the skin. Dewdration™ boosts and locks in moisture for a dewy and youthful result while HydraPack™ leaves skin with an instant silky, soft, and supple feel. GreenEnergy™ smooths and energizes the skin, giving you a healthy-looking, glowing complexion.” Also, from looking at the reviews, it is worth the $69 price tag because about 65% of the 1,241 reviews give it 5 stars!

Have you tried any of these products? If so, what were your thoughts?

Laura Mercier Foundation Primer • Radiance | Review + Swatches

I have been searching high and low for a product that will give me that lit from within glow. I have used the NYX Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator in Pure Gold and it pretty much gives me the look I’m going for. However, I have not been 100% satisfied, so I’ve been trying to find another option.

Last week Sephora had the 20% off sale for VIB and VIB rouge members. I figured that would be the perfect time to stock up on some products and try out some new ones. I went into Sephora and asked for some recommendations. It didn’t matter to me whether the product had moisturizing properties or if it was just to be applied on top of a moisturizer. I just needed a glow. The lady recommended the Laura Mercier Foundation Primer in Radiance, among others. I thought I would start with the Laura Mercier one. It sells for $36.

The product is a lightweight, creamy gel. It isn’t a moisturizer, so you should apply over your moisturizer, but under your foundation. Once the product set, my skin still felt dry. However, it did reduce the appearance of imperfections. The illuminating effect has a pearl tint, which on my skin tone made me look ashy. The tint is more suitable for fairer skin tones.

Overall, this product did not work for me since it felt dry and the pearl tint made my skin look drier. But, this product is still a good product and if you have fair skin and are looking for a product that gives you a light glow, this is the one for you!

5 Steps to Preparing for Counseling

Deciding whether or not to go to counseling can be a very scary thing. You may feel like it is a sign of weakness that you feel a need to go, you may be wondering what others will think, or you’re just plain ole afraid to deal with the broken parts of you.

But, if you have been going back and forth about this decision and for some reason you just can’t escape the thought of it, that’s probably your intuition telling you that you need to talk to a therapist.

There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with talking to a professional. Look at it as a way of improving who you are as a person. Our goal as human beings should be to constantly grow and be better than who we were yesterday. Going to counseling can be your first step to becoming a better you. When you are a better you, you are able to see things from a more positive perspective. You are able to love and be loved properly. You are able to learn how to value yourself. There are so countless benefits to going to counseling, but that’s just a few to get you excited about going.

Although I am no professional, I am here to provide you with 5 steps to prepare for your first counseling session.

1. Open your mind and heart.

The key to having a successful counseling experience is to be open to it. In order to heal and grow, you have to be open to the process. You have to allow yourself to be vulnerable and let another person in so that they can help you. Being vulnerable is not the easiest thing to do, so be patient with yourself in doing this.

2. Find a counselor you feel you can connect with.

Psychology Today is where you can start looking for a therapist in your area. On this site, you can filter your search by the type of counseling you are looking for (family, relationship, career, etc.), religious background, gender, etc. Each therapist will also have a bio for you to read. Hopefully, you will feel drawn to one of the therapist through their bio and, if so, you can go to the next step.

3. Make an appointment.

Alright now is where we get serious. It’s time to make the appointment. It’s best to schedule an appointment within a week of your call; any longer than a week and you may lose your courage and we don’t want that to happen! While you are making your appointment, be sure to ask if they take your insurance. Most people don’t know this, but mental health is covered under most insurance policies.

4. Write down 1 or 2 goals you would like to accomplish.

Now this can be another hard thing to do. Sometimes we don’t know exactly what we are going for, but we just know we need to go. A simple goal could be learning how to love and value yourself, effective communication skills, moving past a breakup, or healing from a past trauma. Those are just a few examples to get you started.

5. COMMIT.

Now this is the most important step. You MUST commit! Counseling is not easy because you will have to dig deep within yourself to address issues that you may not even realize are there. Even when you want to give up because you feel like it’s not working, which it usually doesn’t for the first couple of sessions, stick it out! If your therapist is truly not a good fit, find another. But commit to counseling. People have asked me how many sessions should you commit to. That is a discussion that you would have with your therapist. However, most will say at least 6 to start and then go from there.

I really hope these steps help you in making your decision to attend counseling. If you read my article “The Better Side of Heartbreak”, you can see how much counseling worked for me! It will truly be one of the best decisions you’ve ever made for yourself!

The Better Side of Heartbreak

2016 has been a year of tremendous growth for me and has truly been one of the best years of my life. However, it didn’t start out so great. It actually began horribly. I opened the year experiencing the worst heartbreak of my life (outside of my grandparents passing away) by way of my boyfriend basically leaving me for someone else. This heartbreak brought me all the way to my knees. In one word, it was devastating. I didn’t want to get out of bed. I didn’t want to go anywhere. All I wanted to do was be around my family and, since I live three hours from my family, that’s just what I did. For 3 weekends straight, I went home to be loved on by them. Their love for me brought me back to life and I’m forever grateful for that.

While dealing with the day to day of this breakup, I was in extreme emotional pain and while going through it, all I could think was that I didn’t want to experience it ever again. I knew in order to never experience it again that I had to dig deeper within myself to figure out what got me to this point in the first place. I needed to figure out what was so broken in me that I even allowed myself to stay in such a toxic relationship. A relationship where I knew he wasn’t good for me. I knew he wasn’t in a mentally or emotionally mature enough space to commit to me the way I deserved to be committed to and, yet, I stayed.

I stayed for three long years where I devalued myself for 2 of those 3 years. I allowed my love for him to be greater than the love for myself. I allowed the potential for who I wanted him to be to outweigh who he was in the present. I knew I should’ve left the very first time that I found out he had cheated in 2013, but I stayed. I allowed him to talk me into staying. I was weak to the sweet words he would tell me. I was weak to the way I felt when things were good. And if we are being completely honest, I was weak to the sex. How many of us have stayed in situations for far too long because of at least one of these reasons? Probably all of us, if we are being truthful.

As women, we have so much power, but let others take it away from us because we don’t know our worth. We don’t love ourselves enough to stand up and say “no.” We don’t value ourselves enough to get out of toxic situations out of the fear of having to be alone. Being alone is a good thing. Just because you are alone doesn’t mean you’re “alone.” I wanted my power back…desperately.

Once I reached that conclusion, I really started to take my going to see a therapist seriously. In the black community we kind of shun the idea of going to talk to somebody about what we are going through. We always say that God will fix it and that he wouldn’t put more on us than we could carry. I believe that, but I also believe that he created mental health professionals for a reason. I was serious about getting better mentally and emotionally. I knew I had some hard work ahead of me, but I was ready for it. I was ready to open my heart and my mind to learning more about myself and truly being vulnerable. I found a therapist who believed in God and that I could be completely comfortable with. Finding a therapist you are comfortable with is the most important factor in having a successful experience.

Counseling was one of the best decisions I could’ve made for myself. It helped me to see so many things that I may not have been able to see otherwise. I am able to see how important mental and emotional health are and when those two are out of whack, your decision making will show it. You will end up making decisions that more than likely will hurt you in the long run.

I’ve been single this entire year and it’s been the best decision I could’ve made! I have been able to solely focus on myself. I’ve been able to figure out what it is that I want and need. I’ve found strength in me that I didn’t know I had. At this point in my life, I can honestly say that I am 100% filled with joy and happiness. I fully trust myself now. I trust myself to not settle just because a man sells me a dream. I trust myself to actually be in a healthy, adult relationship without sabotaging it. I trust myself to go with my intuition and not my heart.

Looking back on this heartbreak, I am able to see how necessary it was for my growth as a woman. Because of this one tragic heartbreak, I know I AM a better woman. I am so grateful to have experienced all of this because I learned how to truly forgive someone. I learned how to no longer be the victim in situations. I now know that actions mean so much more than words and I value those whose actions actually match their words. Those are the people I keep around me. I learned how to take every positive that I can from an overall negative situation so that I can grow. I learned what true peace really feels like and I cherish that. I learned to live freely.

In 2016, I found the courage to choose me. I pray that we all have the strength and courage to choose ourselves and to get the help we need when we know we need it. ❤️

NYX Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator | Review + Swatches

During the spring, I was on the prowl for the perfect illuminators, bronzers, and highlighters! I found some goodies which I have reviewed here, here, and here over the past few months. My favorite one so far would have to be the Shimmering Skin Perfector in Champagne Pop by Becca Cosmetics. I reviewed it a couple of weeks ago. It’s my favorite because I just feel so sexy when I wear it! My face just GLOWS and SHIMMERS! It’s an amazing product.

Anyway, this post isn’t about that highlighter. This one is about the NYX Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator in Pure Gold. It sells for $7.49 for 0.6 oz at Ulta. I purchased this during the same trip to Ulta when I purchased the Lorac bronzer (another fave) a few months ago.

When I first tried this product, I didn’t like it because it didn’t have any noticeable shimmer and, at the time, I was looking for a product with shimmer. I used it a couple of times back in March and forgot about it after the Lorac bronzer gave me the look I was going for. Last week, I came across this product in one of my makeup bags and decided I would give it another try. That decision turned out to be a good one!

Although this product has very little shimmer (only noticeable when I swatch it), it still glows! Just look at the picture below! As you can see, the name of the color is on point! It is pure gold on my cheekbones and that pure gold gives just the right amount of pop that I like when I’m trying to be chill but also do a little something extra with my makeup.

How beautiful is this glow!?!

To apply this product, I applied a very small amount to my fingertip and then just blended it in. The product is sheer, which makes it buildable. However, you really do not need a lot of product to achieve a beautiful glow. I’ll use this illuminator when I’m not trying to really have my cheekbones stand out, but I still want a subtle glow.

Is that shimmer even worth noting? I don’t think so!

Have you tried this product before? What were your thoughts?

How to ACTUALLY ENJOY Group Travel

Check out this dope article written by my friend, Sydney! If you love to travel with a group, but sometimes get turned off by doing group activities, this post is for you! It provides some insight into how to do your own thing while not completely dissing your group!

My Lip Regime

So, I am absolutely crazy about my lips. My lips are my favorite feature on my face. With that said, that means I must take great care of my lips. I am so crazy about my lips that I have about four products that I put on my lips BEFORE applying lipstick. Below I have outlined the products and my process. Enjoy! 🙂

First, I outline the area outside of my natural lip line using the e.l.f. Lip Lock Pencil. I use this to keep my lipstick from feathering or budging outside of my lip line. It sells for $3 on e.l.f.’s website.

Second, I line and fill in my lips using the No Bleeding Lips Secret Lip Liner. It is an invisible liner which I prefer to use as my daily lip liner because I don’t have to worry about finding a lip liner that complements the lip color I am wearing that day. It sells for $15 on Sephora’s website.

Next, I prime my lips using Aquaphor (sold at any drugstore or grocery store and sells for approximately $4) and MAC Prep + Prime Lip, $16.50 on MAC’s website. I probably don’t have to use both, but I started and I just can’t stop. lol! I use both of these to moisturize my lips before applying my lipstick, no matter what kind of lipstick I am using. I do this because my lips dry out really easily, which is even more of a problem when wearing lipstick.

Lastly, I apply my lip color of the day and GO! Easy peasy!

What is your routine for applying your lipsticks and glosses? What products do you use? Let me know in the comments!
